Common issues with Mailgun sender

Common Questions:

Emails are not being delivered

When using Zeffi, you might see email statuses as “bounced” or empty.

The common reasons for this are incorrect email addresses, or that the recipient has been blacklisted from sending for some reason. This can be because they have unsubscribed from the emails (this unsubscribe information is stored here in your mailgun) or if you are sending internal invitations (eg. HR surveys) your sender is being flagged as phishing.

To track this down you can use one of the emails that you see in Zeffi, and search from the logs and the suppression lists.

Searching in sending logs

From the left-hand menu, click on “Send” to expand the submenu. Here click on “Sending” to expand the submenu, and proceed to “Logs”.

Be sure to check the region at this point. Mailgun defaults to the US region, but if you have setup your sender in the EU region, it will not show up in the following dropdown if this is not correctly selected

Select the correct domain from the dropdown. Unless you are using Mailgun for other sending, this list should only retain the one domain you have setup for Zeffi use.

Now you should see the logs. Most of the time your interest is in searching for the right recipient and finding the latest event. Below is an example of what an unsubscribed email will look like

Searching in suppression logs

From the left-hand menu, click on “Send” to expand the submenu. Here click on “Sending” to expand the submenu, and proceed to “Suppressions”.

Be sure to check the region at this point. Mailgun defaults to the US region, but if you have setup your sender in the EU region, it will not show up in the following dropdown if this is not correctly selected

Here you will find all the reasons you are not able to deliver emails to specific emails, ranging from emails not existing, too many bounces, or unsubscribes. Mailgun offers a possibility to clear this list, but we highly recommend not using it. Email senders rely on sender trustworthyness in order to surpass spam folders and other anti-phishing tools. Mailgun creates and upkeeps this list to ensure you do not send repeated failed emails from your Zeffi domain sender, as it will drop the trustworthyness and therefore impact your response rates.

However, if you are aware of someone who wants to be removed from the unsubscribe list – proceed below.

Simply use the search box to find the specific email address, and click the deletion-icon. In the example above we have sent invitations to an email address before it was activated, and we know that this individual would like to recieve our emails in the future.
